Should You Really Ditch It All?
You’ve probably seen the viral posts. Bright red text, bold warnings, and a scary message:
“Did you know that ‘fragrance’ as an ingredient is known to cause cancer? Yes, this includes your detergent, candles, perfume, air freshener, and especially dryer sheets. Ditch it ALL.”
This is the kind of post that spreads fast, especially in wellness (and candle) circles. And look, I get it. If you care about your health, your home, your family, it’s normal to pause when something sounds dangerous. But let’s take a step back and find out what’s actually true, what’s exaggerated, and what you can do if you’re genuinely concerned.
What Does “Fragrance” Really Mean on a Label?
When you see the word ‘fragrance’ or ‘parfum’ listed as an ingredient, it usually refers to a mixture of chemicals, some natural, some synthetic, that are used to add scent to a product. That could include essential oils, aroma compounds, solvents, and stabilisers.
The reason it’s listed so vaguely is because fragrance formulas are legally protected as trade secrets. That doesn’t mean companies can put anything they want in there. It just means they don’t have to list each component on the label. These formulas are still highly regulated, tested for safety, and assessed against industry standards (like IFRA, the International Fragrance Association guidelines).
The catch? Not all fragrance ingredients are created equal. And not all companies follow the same standards.

Are Fragrance Ingredients Linked to Cancer?
This is where things get murky. The short answer is: some ingredients used in some fragrance formulas have raised concerns in certain contexts. Concerns are usually based on long-term, high-level exposure in animal studies or industrial settings.
Here are three of the most commonly discussed:
- Phthalates: Phthalates are used to help fragrances last longer, some types (like DEHP) have been linked to hormone disruption in animal studies. Many brands now avoid phthalates completely, especially in personal care and home fragrance.
- Formaldehyde: Formaldehyde is a known human carcinogen, but rarely used directly in fragrance. Some ingredients can release trace amounts of formaldehyde under certain conditions, but consumer products must fall under strict limits set by regulators.
- Benzene: Benzene is a serious carcinogen that’s not supposed to be used in fragrance at all. It has shown up in emissions of certain air fresheners or petrol-based solvents in rare cases, but again, it’s not the norm, and it’s not permitted in safe formulations.
What’s important to understand is that dose matters. Just because something can be harmful in large amounts doesn’t mean it’s harmful in the tiny quantities found in scented products used normally in a ventilated home.

Fragrance in Common Household Products
Instead of lumping everything together, let’s look at the specific items that usually get dragged into these viral claims.
1. Laundry Detergents & Dryer Sheets
Laundry detergents and dryer sheets often contain synthetic fragrances designed to mask the smell of surfactants or leave behind a fresh scent. Some do emit low levels of VOCs (volatile organic compounds) during use, especially dryer sheets, which are heated and vented outdoors.
A 2011 study by Dr Anne Steinemann did find VOCs emitted from dryer vents, but it didn’t measure health outcomes or exposure levels, just presence. It also didn’t differentiate between product types or brands.
Reality check: For most people, occasional use of fragranced laundry products poses little risk. If you have asthma or chemical sensitivity, fragrance-free versions are widely available.
2. Candles
Candles have copped a lot of blame over the years, especially those made with paraffin wax. A 2009 study from South Carolina State University (often cited in fear-based posts) claimed paraffin candles emit dangerous toxins. However, the study was never peer-reviewed or replicated, and experts criticised it for poor methodology.
The National Candle Association (US) and Australian candle makers follow strict safety guidelines. When candles are made with quality materials and burned correctly (trimmed wick, ventilated space, safe burn time), emissions are extremely low, often lower than cooking or burning incense.

3. Air Fresheners
Air fresheners vary widely. Sprays, plug-ins, gels, and aerosols all work differently. Some emit VOCs continuously, which has led to concerns over long-term use in small or unventilated spaces.
Studies like Steinemann’s have found compounds like acetaldehyde and limonene in air fresheners, but again, presence doesn’t equal danger. The amount, your exposure, and the frequency all matter.
If you have respiratory issues or are sensitive to synthetic smells, it’s totally reasonable to skip air fresheners or go for non-aerosol, low-emission options.

4. Perfume and Personal Fragrance
Perfume formulas are among the most complex. Some contain over 100 individual ingredients. The goal is longevity, nuance, and skin safety. But because they’re sprayed directly onto the skin, many people with sensitivities experience headaches or rashes from certain blends.
That doesn’t mean perfume causes cancer. It means some people are sensitive to certain compounds. Again, regulations vary by country, but most reputable perfume brands comply with IFRA standards and cosmetic safety rules.
5. Dryer Sheets
This is the one most often labelled “the worst offender.” To be fair, dryer sheets are heated and can release VOCs into the air through dryer vents. However, most of the concern comes from lab studies that don’t reflect real-world use. If used occasionally and in a well-ventilated laundry area, they’re unlikely to pose significant health risks.
Want to avoid them? Easy. Try wool dryer balls with a few drops of essential oil or skip them entirely. It’s not all-or-nothing.

In short: fragrance isn’t unregulated, and it isn’t automatically dangerous. But standards do vary, which is why choosing transparent, small-batch brands can give you peace of mind.

Let’s Talk About Balance
It’s absolutely okay to be mindful of what you bring into your home. But cutting out every scented product isn’t always practical, or necessary.
Here’s what you can do if you want to reduce exposure without ditching everything:
- Look for phthalate-free or IFRA-compliant fragrance oils
- Use candles made with natural waxes and properly sized wicks
- Burn candles in well-ventilated areas, and for no more than 3–4 hours
- Use essential oils sparingly. Natural doesn’t always mean safe
- Try fragrance-free options if you have sensitivities
And most of all, don’t feel guilty for enjoying a lovely candle or a spritz of perfume. Context matters. Quality matters. Your personal response matters.
