Candle Safety Guidelines

Candle Safety Guidelines: Essential Tips for Safe Use

Just like us, candles need a little positive attention to ensure they perform at their best. Please follow these candle safety guidelines, along with the advice on your Candle Care Card, to get the most enjoyment from your candles, safely.

1. Trim Your Wick Before Every Burn

A properly trimmed wick ensures an even burn and prevents excessive soot.

  • Trim wicks to 5mm before each burn.
  • Avoid burning candles if the wick is too long, as this may cause flickering or uneven burning.

2. Allow the First Burn to Reach the Edge

The first burn is crucial for ensuring your candle melts evenly.

  • Burn your candle for 2-3 hours or until the wax pool reaches the edge.
  • This prevents tunneling, which can waste wax and reduce burn time.

3. Follow the Recommended Burn Time

Burning candles too long can cause overheating and damage the container.

  • Do not burn your candle for more than 3-4 hours at a time.
  • Allow the wax to fully cool before relighting.
  • Discontinue use when 5-10mm of wax remains at the bottom to prevent the vessel from overheating and cracking.

4. Keep Candles on a Stable, Heat-Resistant Surface

Always place candles on a safe, stable surface away from flammable items.

  • Use a heat-resistant holder and a flat, sturdy surface.
  • Keep candles away from flammable materials like curtains, books, and furniture.
  • Ensure at least 1 metre of overhead clearance to prevent heat damage.

5. Never Leave a Burning Candle Unattended

Unattended candles pose a fire risk; always monitor them.

  • Extinguish candles before leaving a room or going to sleep.
  • Do not use candles while sleeping.
  • Keep burning candles out of reach of children and pets.

6. Keep Candles Away from Other Heat Sources

Exposure to direct heat can cause candles to burn unevenly or ignite nearby objects.

  • Keep candles away from draughts, vents, and air currents.
  • Do not place candles near household sprays, furniture, or electrical appliances.

7. Never Touch or Move a Lit Candle

Candle vessels get extremely hot during use.

  • Never touch or move a candle while it is burning.
  • Allow the vessel to cool before handling.

8. Extinguish Candles Properly

Blowing out a candle can cause hot wax to splatter.

  • Use a candle snuffer for a clean and safe extinguish.
  • Never extinguish candles with water or liquids; this can cause the wax to splatter or crack the vessel.

9. Store Candles Safely

Proper storage keeps your candles in the best condition.

  • Store candles in a cool, dry place away from sunlight.
  • Keep them away from heat sources to prevent melting or warping.

Wax Melt Safety Guidelines: Essential Tips for Safe Use

A Wax Melt Care Card is provided with every purchase of wax melts. For safe use, please follow these guidelines to enjoy your melts safely.

1. Always Use an Approved Wax Warmer

Wax melts must only be used in appropriate warmers to ensure safe melting.

  • Remove all packaging before placing the wax in your warmer.
  • Use only in tea light warmers or electric warmers that are specifically designed for wax melts.
  • Read and follow all instructions provided with your wax warmer before use.

2. Never Leave Your Wax Warmer Unattended

An unattended wax warmer can be a fire hazard.

  • Always supervise your warmer while in use.
  • Do not use wax melts while sleeping or leaving the house.
  • Keep warmers out of reach of children and pets.

3. Place Your Wax Warmer on a Heat-Resistant Surface

Like candles, wax warmers should always be placed on stable, heat-resistant surfaces.

  • Use a heat-resistant holder for your warmer.
  • Keep warmers away from flammable materials, such as curtains, furniture, and paper.
  • Burn wax melts away from draughts, vents, or household sprays that could ignite.

4. Know When to Discontinue Use

Old wax should be replaced to maintain safe and effective melting.

  • Stop using your wax melts when 5mm of wax remains in the dish.
  • Never overfill your wax warmer, as excess wax can spill or overheat.

5. Handle Warmers with Care

Warmers become extremely hot while in use, and they should never be moved while still warm.

  • Never touch or move your warmer while it is still lit or powered on.
  • Allow the warmer to fully cool before handling or adding new wax.

6. Dispose of Used Wax Properly

Melted wax should never be poured down the drain.

  • Wait for used wax to cool and harden before removing it from the warmer.
  • Dispose of hardened wax in a bin—do not pour it down drains as it may clog plumbing.

7. Extinguish and Store Wax Melts Safely

Proper handling ensures safe use and long-lasting melts.

  • Never extinguish wax with water or other liquids as this can cause splattering or damage.
  • Store wax melts in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to maintain their fragrance and quality.

Failure to follow these instructions could result in fire hazard or injury.

Note: Burn times listed on this site are approximate only and cannot be guaranteed. Although each candle is tested, environmental factors determine your actual burn time. These can include how often and how long you burn your candle, time between burns, the temperature at your location, the location of your candle, draughts, and other factors.
